Essay On Environment | Cause And Effects Of Environmental Degradation

What we need today after food, shelter, and clothes, is a clean environment and surroundings. Everyone loves to live in a fair environment. So, maintaining a hygienic surrounding is a very important aspect of a healthy and prosperous life.  A clean environment is necessary for a healthy society, unfortunately, due to various factors, its condition is depleting every day.

First Understand "Environment"

What is the environment?    When we see a dictionary, the environment is the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. If we understand in simple words, the environment is something you are very familiar with. It's everything that makes up our surroundings and affects our ability to live on the earth—the air we breathe, the water that covers most of the earth's surface, the plants and animals around us, and much more.

Why Should We Keep The Environment Clean?

With the ever-increasing use of technology and industries flourishing the amount of pollution in our environment is increasing at a rapid pace. Keeping our environment clean is a very important part of our lives these days. It is important to focus on this as we have to make sure that the environment is preserved for future generations. Water pollution and litter are considered to be two of the main cause of the environment being dirty.
People most of the times throw litter and dust on the footpaths and roads instead of throwing it in dustbins. This is how slowly the litter accumulates and transforms into huge garbage. If this garbage is not cleaned, further it smells the stink and welcomes the diseases and then people are affected by it. Thus, if we don’t keep our environment clean there would be many consequences or problems which will be faced by society and people that live in that environment.
Environmental Degradation
According to Wikipedia, Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as airwater, and soil; the destruction of ecosystemshabitat destruction; the extinction of wildlife; and pollution. It is defined as any change or disturbance to the environment perceived to be deleterious or undesirable.
Major Causes Of Environmental degradation
   (1) Population Explosion
One of the main causes of environmental degradation is the tendency of population explosion in India. As a result of it, the pressure of population on land has increased very much and the land is being exploited ruthlessly. The population explosion has caused large-scale deforestation to make use of the land for:
(i) Agriculture,
(ii) Construction projects that are (a) construction of houses for the urban population, (b) construction of river-valley projects for irrigation and power supply.
     (2) Industrialization

The industrial revolution increased human life expectancy and gave us the affordable luxuries of the modern world. It has also led to air, water and soil pollution that has direct effects on human and animal health. China’s explosive industrialization since the 1980s has led to some of the worst air pollutions in the world.

    (3) Deforestation

Man’s insatiable desires to expand his wealth and boundaries have lead to unreasonable deforestation. One of the major effects of deforestation is the increase in the level of environmental CO2. Cutting down forest add more to global warming than factors like cars and trucks combined. Deforestation results in global climate changes and depletion in biodiversity.

    (4)  Urbanization

Transportation results in burning of petroleum fuel worldwide, resulting in the emission of harmful gases such as Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4) and Nitrous Oxide (N2O). Researches have shown that on-road vehicles contribute to one-third of the air pollution that produces smog and results in the emission of greenhouse gases.

  (5) Overconsumption

As countries become wealthier, they consume more resources per capita. The United States, for example, has less than five percent of the world’s population but is responsible for consuming about 25 percent of resources. One American consumes the same amount of resources as 35 people living in India.

 (6) Discard Of Society Rules

Common people in India don't understand it necessary to follow civic norms.  For example, no cleanliness on roads, littering of roads with rubbish, drains remaining choked with silt and refuse, excessive use of loudspeakers, etc. All these factors add to environmental pollution. In short, whereas on the one hand,’ environment has degraded as a result of rapid industrialization and urbanization. On the other, due to the neglect of civic norms by the people, the process of pollution has assumed a permanent character.

Impacts Of Environmental Degradation

The deterioration of the environment has led to several adverse impacts. First, humans are at risk of suffering from dangerous health conditions like, for example, asthma and pneumonia due to air pollution. Another adverse effect is the loss of biodiversity. Environmental degradation might also lead to the depletion of the ozone layer which is responsible for protection against ultraviolet rays of the sun. Last but not least, a significant negative impact of environmental degradation is an economic downfall. For instance, a highly deteriorated environment attracts less or no tourists.
In conclusion, the environment is the ultimate reason for the survival of humankind. Several interventions have to be put in place for use by members of the public to protect and sustain the natural environment.
